Family Law SEO: More Divorce and Custody Clients
Family law SEO is the work of getting a family law firm found in Google's map pack, organic results and AI answers when people search for divorce, custody, child support or prenup help. The highest-impact work is one page per issue, clear fees, careful review replies and private, fast intake. As a rough guide, issue pages like prenups often gain ground in 3-6 months, though it isn't guaranteed.
How customers search for family lawyers
Family law searches are personal and often private. Some people research quietly before deciding to divorce; others were just served papers, missed a custody exchange or need a protective order this week. Many start with do-it-yourself questions like 'how to file for divorce' or 'how much does a divorce cost' before they look for a lawyer, and budget shapes the search. They search by issue, such as custody, child support or a prenup, and they read reviews and ask AI tools whether they even need a lawyer. A family law site has to serve the quiet researcher, the budget shopper and the person in crisis on the same visit.
- Issue searches are big on their own: 'child support lawyer' gets about 49,500 searches a month and 'custody lawyer near me' about 33,100, so each needs its own page.
- Budget matters: 'cheap divorce lawyer near me' gets about 6,600 searches and 'free divorce lawyer' about 3,600. A clear fee page, including any flat-fee or limited-scope options, meets that search honestly.
- Family law clicks cost far less than injury clicks. 'Divorce lawyers near me' averages about $23.59 per click, so paid search can be a practical supplement while SEO builds.
- Smaller searches point to specific client groups: 'grandparents rights' gets about 5,400 searches a month, 'military divorce lawyer' about 2,900 and 'divorce lawyer for men' about 1,300.
| Search term | Monthly US searches | Google Ads cost per click |
|---|---|---|
| family lawyer near me | 110,000 | $30.12 |
| divorce attorney | 90,500 | $26.24 |
| divorce lawyers near me | 60,500 | $23.59 |
| child support lawyer | 49,500 | $28.31 |
| custody lawyer near me | 33,100 | $26.16 |
| how to file for divorce | 12,100 | $6.47 |
| postnuptial agreement | 12,100 | $7.62 |
| uncontested divorce | 9,900 | $11.39 |
| divorce mediator near me | 8,100 | $15.15 |
| how much does a divorce cost | 8,100 | $4.17 |
| cheap divorce lawyer near me | 6,600 | $18.25 |
| prenup lawyer near me | 3,600 | $33.57 |

The SEO checklist for family lawyers
Set your primary Google Business Profile category to 'Family law attorney'
Google's guidelines say to choose categories that complete 'This business IS a' and to use as few as possible. Most family law practices handle custody, support and prenups as well as divorce, so the broader category fits as primary. Add 'Divorce lawyer' as a secondary category if divorce is a large share of your work.
Primary: 'Family law attorney'. Secondary: 'Divorce lawyer'. 'Divorce service' is a separate category; don't use it for a law practice.
Build one page for each family law issue
A single 'Family Law' page can't rank for custody, child support and prenup searches at once. Each page should explain how the issue works in your state, what the process looks like, typical timelines, what affects cost and how to book a consultation.
Start with uncontested divorce, contested divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, protective orders and modifications. 'Postnuptial agreement' alone gets about 12,100 searches a month.
Publish how you charge for each type of matter
Budget shapes many family law searches, so say how you charge before the consultation. Rule 1.5(d)(1), quoted in full in the key facts, is why family law pages describe retainers, hourly rates or flat fees instead of contingency. Comment [6] to Rule 1.5 marks the edge of that rule: it "does not preclude a contract for a contingent fee for legal representation in connection with the recovery of post-judgment balances due under support, alimony, or other financial orders".
State whether you offer a flat fee for uncontested divorces, your initial retainer range for contested cases, and whether consultations are free. 'How much does a divorce cost' gets about 8,100 searches a month.
Answer do-it-yourself searches honestly
Many people start with 'divorce papers' or 'how to file for divorce'. A page that explains when a DIY filing works, when it doesn't, and where your state court's self-help forms are builds trust and earns links. Rule 1.2(c) says: "A lawyer may limit the scope of the representation if the limitation is reasonable under the circumstances and the client gives informed consent." Describe any document review or coaching you offer on those terms.
Target 'how to file for divorce' (about 12,100 searches a month) with a step-by-step guide for your state, linking to the court's official forms page.
Build privacy and safety into your website and intake
Some visitors are researching on a shared phone or computer, and some are in unsafe homes. Give them a fast way to leave the page, ask how to contact them safely, and don't send automated texts or emails until they confirm it's safe. Include domestic violence resources on your protective order page.
Add a 'Quick exit' button that loads a neutral site, a 'Is it safe to call or text you?' field on the intake form, and the National Domestic Violence Hotline number, 1-800-799-7233.
Ask for reviews with privacy in mind, and give nothing in return
Reviews drive map rankings and reassure people choosing a lawyer for a painful matter. Google shows the reviewer's profile name, so some family law clients will decline, and that's fine. Offer nothing in return: Google's review policy bars incentives "in exchange for posting any review".
At the close of a matter, send your Google review link with a note that the client doesn't need to mention their case.
Reply to reviews, including ones from a client's ex, without case details
Opposing parties sometimes post reviews in family law matters, and replying with facts about the case can reveal your client's confidential information. ABA Formal Opinion 496 concludes that lawyers "may not disclose information relating to any client's representation, or information that could reasonably lead to the discovery of confidential information by others." A review by your client's ex is about your client's matter, so that conclusion covers it. States differ on how much a reply may say: Florida Opinion 20-1 allows a general statement "that the online review is neither fair nor accurate", so check your own state's opinion before using that line.
Opinion 496's sample reply: 'Professional obligations do not allow me to respond as I would wish.' Never name the reviewer, the children or the outcome.
Keep client stories anonymous and get written consent
Divorce and custody files often sit in public court records, but Comment [3] to Rule 1.6 (Minnesota's text) says the confidentiality rule "applies not only to matters communicated in confidence by the client but also to all information relating to the representation, whatever its source." Get informed consent before sharing any case story, and change identifying details even with consent. Never use children's names, ages or schools.
Write 'a parent who relocated for work kept shared custody after a modification hearing' rather than names, dates or the county.
Treat mediation as its own search, with its own page and listings
'Divorce mediator near me' gets about 8,100 searches a month, and those searchers want a neutral, not an advocate for one spouse. If you mediate, give it a separate page that explains your role, your fees and what happens if mediation fails, and keep any court mediator roster listing consistent with your firm profile. General directory cleanup is the same for every practice area and is covered in our SEO for law firms guide.
Rule 2.4(b) shapes the page wording: "A lawyer serving as a third-party neutral shall inform unrepresented parties that the lawyer is not representing them. When the lawyer knows or reasonably should know that a party does not understand the lawyer's role in the matter, the lawyer shall explain the difference between the lawyer's role as a third-party neutral and a lawyer's role as one who represents a client." Say so on the mediation page.
Track consultations by issue and source
Measure booked consultations and retained clients, not traffic. Separate divorce, custody, support and prenup inquiries so you can see which pages bring the matters you want. Keep tracking notes free of sensitive details.
Log issue type and source for each consultation with a short code such as 'custody modification, Business Profile', not notes about the family's situation.
Build a county page only when you can say something true about that courthouse
Procedures differ by county, so a family firm serving several counties may need a page for each. Google's spam policies name the risk: doorway abuse includes "Having multiple domain names or pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page." A county page earns its place with facts a parent there can use: the courthouse address, local filing steps, the court's self-help center and any parenting class the county requires.
Use an issue-first URL structure such as /divorce/uncontested/ and /custody/modification/, and place county pages under the issue they explain, such as /divorce/[county]-county/.

- Add 'Mediation service' only if you actually work as a neutral mediator, and give that work its own page with the Rule 2.4(b) wording.
- Dalton Luka's dated list of Google categories (last updated May 9, 2026) has no 'Child custody lawyer' or 'Child support lawyer' category. Add custody and support as services, cover them in your description, and confirm in the category picker before saving.
- Don't create a second profile for '[Name] Mediation' at your firm's address. Google says "A practitioner shouldn't have multiple Business Profiles to cover all of their specializations."
- If you offer video or evening consultations, list them as services and keep your hours accurate.
- Use photos of your lawyers, office entrance and meeting rooms. Don't post photos of clients or their children, even with consent.
Getting found in ChatGPT and Google's AI answers
People considering divorce put questions like 'How is child support calculated in my state?' and 'Do I need a lawyer for an uncontested divorce?' to AI tools. Asking AI for local recommendations is now mainstream: BrightLocal's 2026 survey counted 45% of consumers doing it. Google says AI Overviews need nothing beyond normal indexing and snippet eligibility, so pages that rank can be cited. AI answers on family law differ by state, which gives firms with clear, state-specific pages an advantage.
- Open each issue page with a one-sentence definition, such as 'An uncontested divorce is a divorce in which both spouses agree on all terms, including property, support and custody.'
- Explain your state's rules with citations to the statute or court guideline, such as the child support guidelines or any mandatory waiting period, and date the page. Under 45 CFR 302.56(e), "The State shall publish on the internet and make accessible to the public all reports of the guidelines reviewing body, the membership of the reviewing body, the effective date of the guidelines, and the date of the next quadrennial review," so cite your state's published guideline and its effective date.
- Describe your fee structures in plain text: flat fees, retainers, hourly rates and whether consultations are free.
- Answer 'Do I need a lawyer?' honestly, including when mediation or a DIY filing may be enough.
- Ask an AI tool how child support is calculated in your state and whether your state has a waiting period for divorce. If the answer is wrong or cites another state, publish a dated page that cites your state's guideline and statute.
How much does SEO for family lawyers cost?
Family law SEO typically combines issue pages for divorce, custody and support, Google Business Profile work, directory cleanup, review requests and local links. Cost depends mainly on how many issues and counties you target and how many established family law firms compete in your market.
What affects the cost
- Market competition: metro areas with many family law firms need more content and links than a single-county practice.
- How many issue pages you need, from uncontested divorce to custody modifications, prenups and protective orders.
- How many counties or courthouses you serve, since procedures and local rules can differ.
- Review and compliance time: sensitive topics need lawyer review for accuracy, confidentiality and advertising rules.
- What paid clicks cost: 'child custody lawyer' averages about $36.60 per click and 'prenup lawyer near me' about $33.57 (Google Ads data via DataForSEO, October 2026).
| Option | Best for | Tradeoffs |
|---|---|---|
| DIY | Solo family lawyers in one county with time to write state-specific guides. | Costs hours you could bill. Profile, reviews and a few issue pages are manageable; ongoing content and link building usually stall during busy court calendars. |
| Freelancer | Firms that need specific work, such as writing issue pages or fixing site speed. | Lower cost, but writers new to family law can get state rules wrong or include identifying client details, so every page needs lawyer review. |
| Agency | Multi-lawyer or multi-county firms that want steady growth without managing it. | Paid monthly for ongoing work. Ask who owns the content, how confidentiality is handled in case stories and reviews, and whether reports show retained clients. |
| Lead services | Firms with open capacity that need consultations now. | You pay for every lead, and many are price shoppers or out of your area. The bar rules on paying lead generators are the same in every practice area and are quoted in our SEO for law firms guide; read them before signing. |

SEO vs. ads vs. lead services for family lawyers
| Channel | How you pay | Who owns it | Time to results | Exclusive leads? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | A monthly retainer to a provider, or your own evenings. | Your issue pages, state guides, fee page and client reviews stay with the firm. | Months. Issue pages like prenups and uncontested divorce often move before 'divorce lawyers near me'. | Yes. People contact your firm directly. |
| Google Ads | Per click: about $23.59 for 'divorce lawyers near me' and $36.60 for 'child custody lawyer' (US average, October 2026). | You keep the account data, but divorce and custody inquiries from ads stop as soon as the daily budget is gone. Custody and divorce ads must follow your state's lawyer advertising rules too. | Days, once campaigns are approved. | Yes, but DIY and free-help searchers click too, so use negative keywords like 'free' and 'forms'. |
| Local Services Ads | Billing happens per valid lead, meaning a spouse or parent who calls or messages from the ad. These ads are moving into Google Ads as Performance Max campaigns billed per lead. Home services went first in August 2026; Google gives no date for legal categories and schedules all remaining categories for 2027. | Google owns the platform. The 'Family lawyer' category requires state bar license checks for each family lawyer, identity checks and professional liability insurance, and verified firms show the Google Verified badge. | Weeks, because verification must finish first. | Leads contact you directly, but people can contact several firms from the same results. |
| Bar referral services and directories | Referral fees, subscriptions or per lead, depending on the service. State and local bar family law referral panels are one option; the referral-fee rules are the same in every practice area and are covered in our SEO for law firms guide. | The service owns the listing and the first contact. | Fast for paid placements. | Varies. Ask whether each referral or lead goes to you alone or to several lawyers. |
Turn rankings into booked jobs: answer every call
Better rankings bring more calls, and family law callers are often upset, short on time or calling when they can talk privately. Someone who was just served, or who has a hearing next week, will keep calling firms until someone answers. Clio's 2024 secret shopper study of 500 law firms found only 40% answered the phone and 33% responded to email. For a family law firm, how intake answers the first call also sets the tone for a relationship that can last months.
- Watch for the spouse who calls to conflict you out. Comment [2] to Rule 1.18 says "a person who communicates with a lawyer for the purpose of disqualifying the lawyer is not a 'prospective client.'" Collect only names and the county on the first call, so a spouse calling several firms learns nothing and tells you nothing that could disqualify you.
- Run the conflict check before hearing the story. Rule 1.18(c) says a lawyer "shall not represent a client with interests materially adverse to those of a prospective client in the same or a substantially related matter if the lawyer received information from the prospective client that could be significantly harmful to that person in the matter, except as provided in paragraph (d)." Collect both spouses' names first.
- Ask whether it's safe to call back, text or leave a voicemail, and never leave case details in a voicemail.
- An AI receptionist can answer at night, collect the county, whether children are involved, any upcoming hearing date and the other party's name, then book a consultation or flag an urgent matter for a lawyer.
- Give it firm rules: never give legal advice or predict custody outcomes, send anyone in danger to 911 and the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233), and route hearings within a few days to a lawyer the same day.

Seasonality for family lawyers
- November to December
- Custody searches dip over the holidays: 'custody lawyer near me' fell to about 22,200 US searches in November 2025. University of Washington researchers found divorce filings also slow over the holidays, when filing is seen as inappropriate. 'Divorce lawyer near me' did not dip in this data; it held at about 60,500 every month from September 2025 to April 2026. Update fee and process pages now.
- January to March
- Custody and high-asset searches climb. 'Custody lawyer near me' reached about 40,500 in March 2026, and 'high asset divorce attorney' about 1,300 in March versus about 480 in November 2025. The UW study found filings peak in March; filings and searches are different measurements, so plan for both.
- April to July
- Custody searches slow into summer: 'child custody lawyer' fell from about 33,100 in May 2026 to about 18,100 in July 2026, and 'divorce lawyer near me' eased to about 49,500 from May to August 2026. Use the quieter months to publish state guides and earn links.
- August to October
- The second peak. The UW study found filings rise in August, with the school year a likely factor for parents. 'Child custody lawyer' reached about 49,500 searches in September and October 2025, and 'child support lawyer' about 74,000 in October 2025.
- Year-round
- Some searches barely move: 'how to file for divorce' was at about 12,100 in 11 of the last 12 months, and 'uncontested divorce' at about 9,900 in 10 of the last 12. These pages bring steady traffic between peaks.
Common SEO mistakes family lawyers make
- Advertising 'no fee unless you win' for divorce or custody matters. Describe flat fees, retainers or hourly rates instead, and read Rule 1.5(d)(1) in the key facts before using any 'no fee' wording.
- Replying to a former spouse's angry review with the facts of the case. Post a short reply that discusses nothing about the matter, or don't reply. ABA Opinion 496 and Florida Opinion 20-1 both rule out revealing client information in a reply, but Florida also permits saying the review is "neither fair nor accurate", so check your state's opinion.
- Posting client success stories that could identify the family. Get informed consent, remove identifying details and never mention children. A public court file is still information relating to the representation.
- Covering divorce, custody, support and prenups on one 'Family Law' page. Give each issue its own page with state-specific process, timeline and cost information.
- Sending automatic follow-up texts and emails to every web lead. Ask for a safe contact method first, and only then start follow-ups.
- Hiding fees until the consultation. Publish how you charge by matter type so budget-conscious searchers can decide to call.
- Letting both spouses tell their full story to intake. Run conflict checks on both spouses' names first, so neither can share information that triggers Rule 1.18(c).
How long does SEO take for family lawyers?
- Month 1
Audit the site, profile and directories. Set categories and services, add quick-exit and safe-contact features, set up tracking by issue type and start review requests from closed matters.
- Months 2-3
Build issue pages for divorce, custody, support, prenups and protective orders with lawyer review, plus a fee page and, if you mediate, a mediation page. Less competitive issues such as postnups often move first.
- Months 4-6
Publish state-specific guides, such as how child support is calculated and how to file for divorce, and earn links from local therapists' groups, mediation organizations and community talks. Time new pages to go live before the August to October peak.
- Months 7-12
Rankings for 'divorce lawyers near me' and 'family lawyer near me' build as reviews and links grow. Refresh pages before the January to March peak and check how AI tools describe your firm.
Frequently asked questions
How much does family law SEO cost?
It depends mainly on how many issues and counties you target and how many established family law firms compete in your area. A single-county practice needs much less content and link building than a firm covering a whole metro. Family law clicks are cheaper than many legal terms, with 'divorce lawyers near me' at about $23.59 per click (Google Ads data via DataForSEO, October 2026).
Will AI answers about divorce send people to DIY forms instead of lawyers?
Some, and that is a reason to answer the DIY question yourself. Many searchers do want forms, and AI answers on divorce depend on the state. A firm page that explains when a DIY filing works in your state, when it doesn't and what you charge for limited help gives an AI tool something specific to cite, and Google's documentation lists no extra requirement for AI Overviews beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet.
Can I do SEO for my family law practice myself?
Yes, the foundation. Setting the right category, listing services, cleaning up directories and writing a page for each issue are manageable for a solo lawyer. Keeping up with state-specific guides, links and review requests is where most practices fall behind.
How long does SEO take for a family law firm?
As a rough guide, map movement often starts within 3-6 months and steadier consultation growth usually takes 6-12 months, though neither is guaranteed. Issue pages like prenups and uncontested divorce tend to move before competitive terms like 'divorce lawyers near me'.
Can a family lawyer advertise 'no fee unless we win'?
Not for the core of most family matters. Rule 1.5(d) says: "A lawyer shall not enter into an arrangement for, charge, or collect: (1) any fee in a domestic relations matter, the payment or amount of which is contingent upon the securing of a divorce or upon the amount of alimony or support, or property settlement in lieu thereof". Comment [6] to the rule discusses one exception, for collecting post-judgment balances, so read it before advertising any contingent arrangement. Advertise the fee structures you actually use, and check your state's version of Rule 1.5, published with your state's rules of professional conduct by your state bar or supreme court.
How should a family lawyer respond to a bad review from a client's ex?
Briefly and without any information about the case, or not at all. ABA Formal Opinion 496 concludes that lawyers "should consider ignoring a negative post or review because responding may draw more attention to it and invite further response from an already unhappy critic." A reply to your client's ex is a reply about your client's matter, so it can't reveal anything about the representation.
Should a family law firm target 'cheap divorce' and DIY divorce searches?
Yes, if you answer them honestly. 'Divorce papers' gets about 40,500 searches a month and 'cheap divorce lawyer near me' about 6,600 (Google Ads data via DataForSEO, October 2026). A clear guide and fee page, plus any flat-fee or limited-scope options, turns some of those visitors into clients.
When do the most people look for a divorce lawyer?
It depends on what you measure. University of Washington research found divorce filings in Washington state peaked in March and August from 2001 to 2015. Google searches for 'divorce lawyer near me' barely moved in this data: about 60,500 a month from September 2025 to April 2026 and about 49,500 from May to August 2026. Custody searches moved more, from about 22,200 for 'custody lawyer near me' in November 2025 to about 40,500 in March 2026. Have pages updated and intake covered before March and August.
