SEO for Locksmiths: Fake Listings, Verification, Car Keys
SEO for locksmiths is the work of getting a real, local locksmith company found in Google's map pack, organic results and AI answers by people who are locked out, need a car key, or want locks changed. The hard part is proving you are real among fake listings, so verification, an honest profile and answered calls come before anything clever.
How customers search for locksmiths
Locksmith searches split into three kinds of caller. The lockout caller types 'locksmith near me' (about 673,000 a month), 'locked out of car' or 'emergency locksmith', is standing outside, and will phone the first listing that looks real. The car key caller types 'car key replacement' or 'key fob replacement near me', has lost or broken a key rather than lost access, and has time to compare. The planned caller types 'rekey locks', 'commercial locksmith' or 'how much does a locksmith cost', and reads before dialing. The three need different pages and different first screens, and only the first is decided in seconds.
- Car work is its own market inside the trade: 'car locksmith near me' (about 74,000), 'car key replacement' (about 33,100) and 'key fob replacement near me' (about 18,100) each out-search 'rekey locks' and 'commercial locksmith' (about 6,600 each).
- 'Locksmith near me' reads 673,000 in all 12 months, which looks like a rounded ceiling, not a trend. Do not plan seasons around it.
- 'Key fob replacement near me' climbed for three straight months, from about 14,800 in May 2026 to about 40,500 in August 2026, while 'car key replacement' slid from about 40,500 to about 27,100 over the same year. One year of data cannot say whether that is a shift or noise.
- Cost searches are a separate funnel: 'how much does a locksmith cost' gets about 5,400 searches a month and 'locksmith cost' about 3,600. 'Rekey cost' (about 110) and 'house lockout' (about 480) are too small to build around.
- Several terms (emergency locksmith, commercial locksmith, rekey locks) show a high reading in both September 2025 and July 2026; 24 hour locksmith reads high only in September 2025. Shared spikes across unrelated terms are probably a data artifact, so this page draws no seasonal conclusion from them.
| Search term | Monthly US searches | Google Ads cost per click |
|---|---|---|
| locksmith near me | 673,000 | $15.70 |
| car locksmith near me | 74,000 | $15.01 |
| car key replacement | 33,100 | $11.82 |
| key fob replacement near me | 18,100 | $8.70 |
| mobile locksmith | 18,100 | $18.44 |
| emergency locksmith | 12,100 | $21.95 |
| 24 hour locksmith | 12,100 | $18.40 |
| locked out of car | 8,100 | $15.69 |
| rekey locks | 6,600 | $6.84 |
| commercial locksmith | 6,600 | $10.68 |
| how much does a locksmith cost | 5,400 | $10.78 |
| safe locksmith | 5,400 | $10.02 |

The SEO checklist for locksmiths
Get through Google's verification before you spend on anything else
Google lists locksmith services under Advanced Verification, and its help page says the process includes video interviews conducted by Google. For an owner it checks "professional license validity (where applicable)", and the qualifier matters: in a state with no locksmith licence there is nothing to check, so your business registration, your name and your real location carry the weight. Local Services Ads help adds that "Pre-badge ads aren't available for garage door services, health care verticals, and locksmiths", so Local Services Ads cannot run before the badge, and search ads wait on Advanced Verification.
Keep one folder with your business registration, any state licence number, insurance certificate, photo ID and photos of the van and equipment, and use your real legal name everywhere.
Make the profile unmistakably a real business
The FTC's May 2026 case describes fake listings whose addresses "belong to unrelated third parties or are made up", so a profile that matches reality on every point is your advantage. Google's guideline says "Your name should reflect your business's real-world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website, stationery, and as known to customers." Use the same legal name, number and service area on the site, the profile, invoices and the van.
Do not add 'Emergency 24/7 Cheap' to the profile name. Put hours in the hours field and services in the services list.
Set up as a service-area business and keep the address rules
Most mobile locksmiths have no shop. Google's service-area rule is "If you're a service-area business, you should hide your business address from customers." The same page says the overall service area "shouldn't extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time from where your business is based." It also says "If your business rents a physical mailing address but doesn't operate out of that location, also known as a virtual office, that location isn't eligible for a Business Profile." Do not rent a mailbox to look local.
List only the cities you can reach in a reasonable response time, and use your real base address as a hidden address.
Keep your phone number clean
Call tracking is normal in this trade, and so are forwarded numbers. Google's guideline says "Do not provide phone numbers or URLs that redirect or 'refer' users to landing pages or phone numbers other than those of the actual business." Read that before you put a tracking line on the profile, and check that the number rings your own phones, not a dispatcher who sells the job to someone else.
Use a local number that you own and that reaches your own staff, and keep the same number on the site and the profile.
Report fake listings in your area, with evidence
Google's Maps help describes two routes. In Maps: Suggest an edit, then Place is closed or not here, then Offensive, harmful, or misleading, then Submit. For misleading names, phone numbers or websites there is a Business Redressal Complaint form, and the Maps help page says it lets you report multiple businesses at once "by uploading 10 or more profiles or a spreadsheet with all URLs." Collect the profile URLs, the address check and the number before you file.
Screenshot each profile, note that its address is a house or an empty lot on Street View, and file them in one batch with the form.
Build a separate page for car keys
Car key replacement and key fob searches are large and mostly not emergencies: 'car key replacement' about 33,100 and 'key fob replacement near me' about 18,100 a month. The searcher wants to know whether you can make a key for their make and year, where you do it, how long it takes and whether you come to them. Name the jobs: lost-all-keys, spare key, fob programming, ignition repair.
Give the car page its own phone button and a makes-and-years list, separate from the lockout page.
Separate the lockout page, the planned-work page and the commercial page
The emergency visitor needs a phone number first, your service area, and what happens after the call. The 'how much does a locksmith cost' visitor (about 5,400 a month) needs what changes the price: time of day, distance, lock type, vehicle. A commercial or safe visitor needs to see you do master key systems, access control or safe opening. One page for all three can lose the visitor in the biggest hurry.
Put a tel: link above the fold on the lockout and car pages, and a request-a-visit form on the commercial page.
Put your licence number, ID policy and price rules in plain sight
Where a state licenses locksmiths, show the number and link to the regulator's lookup. Texas Occupations Code Sec. 1702.2865(a) says a locksmith company or locksmith "may not perform services for a customer who seeks entry to a structure, motor vehicle, or other property unless the customer, in the course of the transaction: (1) shows the locksmith company or locksmith a government-issued identification; and (2) provides a signed authorization stating that the customer owns or is otherwise entitled to legal access to the structure, motor vehicle, or other property." Subsection (b) exempts cases of imminent threat to a person or property; see the calls section. Tell people before the call what to have ready.
Our suggested house policy, which asks for more than the Texas statute (proof, not only a signed authorization): a short box saying 'Have ID and proof you own or may enter the property ready. We will ask for both.' Adapt it to what your state requires.
Add Locksmith structured data that matches the page
schema.org has a Locksmith type, a subtype of HomeAndConstructionBusiness, which sits under LocalBusiness. The areaServed property is available on Organization, which includes Locksmith. Mark up name, phone, hours, areaServed and the same address you show to customers, and make sure each value also appears as visible text.
Use the Locksmith type with areaServed listing your cities, and the same phone number as the visible click-to-call button.
Ask every customer for an honest review
Keep the request plain: Google's review policy says merchants should not "request that specific content be included". Do not offer anything in return for a review. Google bans incentives, and the FTC rule at 16 CFR 465.4 bars incentives "conditioned expressly or by implication on, the writing or creation of consumer reviews expressing a particular sentiment, whether positive or negative".
Text the review link after every job with one plain line asking for an honest review, and don't suggest what to write.
Track calls by job type
A lockout, a fob and a commercial rekey are different margins sharing one number. Tag each call as lockout, car key, rekey, commercial or safe, and whether it booked. After a quarter you can see which page earns jobs and which only earns calls.
Add a job-type field to dispatch notes and compare calls to booked jobs for each page.
Google Business Profile for locksmiths
- Primary category
- Locksmith
- Secondary categories to consider
- Emergency locksmith service, Key duplication service, Safe & vault shop
- Services to list
- House lockout, Car lockout, Rekey locks, Lock change and repair, Deadbolt installation, Car key replacement, Key fob programming, Transponder key programming, Ignition repair, Spare keys, Master key systems, Commercial lock service, Access control installation, Safe opening and installation
- Checked against Dalton Luka's complete category list, last updated May 9, 2026, on October 2, 2026: 'Locksmith', 'Emergency locksmith service', 'Key duplication service' and 'Safe & vault shop' appear on it. Confirm in the category picker before you save.
- The list has no car key or key fob category, so car key work belongs in services and the description under 'Locksmith'.
- Only add 'Emergency locksmith service' if you really take emergency calls at the hours you list, 'Key duplication service' if you duplicate keys at a counter or kiosk, and 'Safe & vault shop' if you do safe work.
- Service-area businesses should hide the address. Google's guideline says "If you're a service-area business, you should hide your business address from customers."
- Do not add keywords or hours to the business name. Use the name on your invoices and van.
Getting found in ChatGPT and Google's AI answers
AI answers handle two locksmith questions differently. 'How much does a locksmith cost' and 'rekey vs replace locks' are explanations, and an AI tool will assemble them from pages that spell out what changes a price. 'Locksmith near me' is a local lookup that ends in a business name and a phone number. Both reward the same thing: facts that are consistent everywhere.
- Publish what changes a price: time of day, distance, lock type, vehicle make and year, and whether a key must be cut or programmed. Use plain words and your own figures, not a range copied from a cost site.
- State your licence number, insurance and ID policy in text on the home page and again on the profile description.
- Keep name, phone number, service area and hours identical on the site, the profile, Facebook, Yelp and any directory. A mismatch is one way a fake listing and a real one can get confused.
- Write a car key page that lists makes, model years, key types and where the work happens, as text a tool can quote.
- Add photos of your own van, uniform and technicians, taken by you, so the profile and the site show the people who will arrive.
- Watch the AI answers for your own business name once a month and correct any wrong phone number at its source.
How much does SEO for locksmiths cost?
SEO for locksmiths mostly costs time spent on three things: proving you are real to Google, building separate pages for lockouts, car keys and commercial work, and keeping fake competitors reported. What drives the price is how many cities you serve, how many job types you want pages for, and how much cleanup the existing profile needs.
What affects the cost
- Verification state: a new or suspended profile needs documents and time before any SEO shows up.
- How many job types get their own page: lockout, car key, rekey, commercial and safe work are different searches.
- Service area size: Google's 2-hour driving limit means a wide area needs real depth in each city, not copies.
- Fake-listing pressure in your market: more fakes mean more evidence gathering and reporting.
- Call handling: whether every call is answered decides how much of the traffic turns into jobs.
| Option | Best for | Tradeoffs |
|---|---|---|
| DIY | A one-van operation with a clean profile and time to keep it current. | Fixing verification and filing fake-listing reports takes steady attention that competes with jobs. |
| Freelancer | Owners who need car key and lockout pages written and the profile set up once. | Ask who owns the profile, the number and the pages; a freelancer who controls them can walk away with them. |
| Agency | Multi-van or multi-city operators who need pages, profile and reporting run together. | Verify the agency has handled locksmith verification and fake-listing reports before, and that you own every account. |
| Lead services | A short-term way to get calls while a new profile is verified. | The service may own the listing, the number and the customer, so check the phone-number rule above and what happens to the number when you leave. |

SEO vs. ads vs. lead services for locksmiths
| Channel | How you pay | Who owns it | Time to results | Exclusive leads? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEO and Google Business Profile | Time or a service fee; calls come to you at no per-click cost. | You own the site and profile if you set them up in your own accounts. | Weeks for a clean profile; longer for new pages and reviews. | Yes, the caller phones you directly. |
| Google Ads | Per click, after Advanced Verification clears. | You own the account; Google lists locksmith services under Advanced Verification, with a video interview. | Days once verified, but verification comes first. | Yes, per click. |
| Local Services Ads | Per lead. | Google runs the platform. Its help page lists locksmiths as a category and says pre-badge ads aren't available for them. Google's first group moving to pay-per-lead goals in August 2026 (plumbing, HVAC, electrical, appliance repair, house cleaning, lawn care, roofing, pest control, and moving) does not list locksmiths. | After the badge process is complete. | The lead reaches you, but the customer may contact several listings. |
| Lead services and call-center networks | Per lead or per job, depending on the service. | Ask in writing who owns the listing, the number and the customer. | Days. | Ask whether the lead is sold to one locksmith or several. |
Turn rankings into booked jobs: answer every call
A lockout caller does not leave a voicemail or fill in a form. They call the next listing. The call is also where the trade's rules show up: what you ask for before you start work decides whether the job is lawful, so the first minute of the call matters.
- The caller may be locked out, possibly at night and on a phone that is running low. Answer in the business name, ask where they are, and give an arrival window you can keep.
- Say what you will ask for on arrival. Where a state requires it, that includes ID and a signed statement: Texas Sec. 1702.2865(a) lists government ID and a signed authorization that the customer owns or is otherwise entitled to legal access. Telling the caller on the phone avoids an argument on the curb.
- The same section includes an exemption in Sec. 1702.2865(b): "A locksmith company or locksmith is exempt from Subsection (a) if the locksmith is requested to perform services in a case of imminent threat to a person or property." Write your own rule for those calls and check it with your regulator.
- State the price rules before dispatch. A bait-and-switch pattern is documented by Connecticut's Department of Consumer Protection (July 2026): "The consumer is initially offered a low price for an unlocking service. However, when the alleged locksmith arrives, they will claim that the project is 'more complicated than anticipated' and increase the price." Quote the fee structure up front and keep it consistent.
- If you work alone, calls arrive while you are on a job. An AI receptionist or answering service can collect location, vehicle or door type, and urgency, then text you; set it never to promise a price it cannot honor or to open anything before the ID step above.
- Count missed calls by hour. If most come in the evening, that is when your answering has to be strongest.

Seasonality for locksmiths
- Key fob searches, summer 2026
- 'Key fob replacement near me' went from about 14,800 US searches in May 2026 to about 40,500 in August 2026, while 'car key replacement' was flat at about 27,100 from April to August. One year of data cannot say whether this repeats, so check your own call log for summer before staffing around it.
- Year-round lockouts
- 'Locksmith near me' is reported at 673,000 in every month and 'car locksmith near me' at 74,000 or 60,500, so lockout demand appears steady all year. Staff for the evenings, not a season.
- Spikes shared across terms
- Emergency, commercial and rekey terms read high in September 2025 and July 2026; 24 hour locksmith only in September 2025. Treat that as a probable data artifact until your own call data shows the same.
Common SEO mistakes locksmiths make
- Naming the profile 'Cheap Emergency Locksmith 24/7' to rank. Use your real-world business name. Google's guideline says it should reflect your business's real-world name as used on your storefront, website and stationery, and its list of things to leave out of a name includes service information and business hours.
- Renting a mailbox or virtual office to show a local address. Google says a rented mailing address you don't operate out of "isn't eligible for a Business Profile". Hide the address as a service-area business.
- Starting ad spend before verification. Google lists locksmith services under Advanced Verification and says pre-badge ads aren't available for locksmiths. Finish verification first.
- Putting lockouts, car keys and commercial work on one page. Give each its own page. The three searches are different callers with different urgency.
- Using a call-center or lead-service number on the profile. Google's guideline bars numbers that redirect or refer users to numbers other than those of the actual business. Use a number that rings your own phones.
- Quoting a cheap price on the phone and a higher one on arrival. Quote what the job costs, including trip and after-hours fees, before you leave. The bait-and-switch pattern is the one regulators describe in their scam alerts.
- Advertising as a locksmith without checking the state's licence rule. In Texas the word in your advertising can itself make you a locksmith company under Sec. 1702.1056(a). Check your state.
How long does SEO take for locksmiths?
- Month 1
Gather registration, licence and insurance documents, correct the profile name, address settings and number, report fake listings in your area, and build the lockout and car key pages.
- Months 2 to 3
Publish the commercial, rekey and cost pages, add structured data, and start asking every customer for a review. Verification or reinstatement may take much of this period.
- Months 4 to 6
Compare calls and booked jobs by job type, and expand the pages that book. Map pack movement usually shows up here, depending on how many fake listings are still in your market.
- Months 7 to 12
Review the AI answers for your business name, fix wrong facts, check for new fake listings and refresh the car key page with new makes and years.
Frequently asked questions
How much does SEO for a locksmith cost?
It depends on the verification state of your profile, how many job types and cities need pages, and how much fake-listing reporting your market requires. Ask any provider to list what they will do in month one and who owns each account.
Do AI answers change how locksmiths get found?
Yes for planned work, and the evidence is in the searches. 'How much does a locksmith cost' (about 5,400 a month) and 'rekey locks' (about 6,600) are explanations an AI tool builds from pages that state what changes a price. An AI answer cannot open a car door, so the lockout still ends in a call, and the profile and number it shows have to be yours.
Can I do locksmith SEO myself?
Yes, if your profile is clean and you will keep it current. The profile name, address, phone and category rules are all published by Google, and the work is mostly consistency. The hard parts are verification delays and reporting fakes.
How long does it take?
A clean profile can start to show in weeks. New pages and reviews take months, and a suspended or unverified profile adds time before anything counts.
How do I get locksmith clients?
Be found where the call is made: a verified profile with a real name and local number, a lockout page and a car key page that load fast on a phone, and every call answered. Honest reviews from every customer help the next caller choose.
Are locksmiths still in demand?
Searches suggest so. 'Locksmith near me' is reported at 673,000 US searches a month, and car key terms add tens of thousands more. Search volume says people look for locksmiths, not how many jobs an individual company can win.
Will AI replace locksmiths?
AI changes who gets found and called, not who carries the tools to the door. The risk to a locksmith is not being named in the answer, which is why consistent profile facts and plain pages matter.
Do I need a license to be a locksmith?
It depends on the state. ALOA counted 13 states with state locksmith licensing as of January 2025, and some cities and counties add their own rules. In Texas, Sec. 1702.102(a) says that unless the person holds a license as a security services contractor, a person may not "act as an alarm systems company, armored car company, courier company, guard company, or locksmith company", and Sec. 1702.1056(a) defines a locksmith company. Check your state regulator and your city.
Do fob and transponder programming count as locksmith work?
In California, yes. Bus. & Prof. Code Sec. 6980(j) defines a locksmith as someone who engages in "rekeying, installing, repairing, opening, modifying locks, or who originates keys for locks, including, but not limited to, electronic cloning of transponder keys and any other electronic programming of automotive keys and electronic operating devices, such as key fobs". Other states differ, so check yours.
How do I report a fake locksmith listing?
In Google Maps use Suggest an edit, then Place is closed or not here, then Offensive, harmful, or misleading. For fraudulent names, phone numbers or websites, Google provides a Business Redressal Complaint form, which accepts multiple profiles at once.
