SEO for Painters: Win Near-Me Searches and Lead-Safe Trust

SEO for painters is the work of getting a painting company found in Google's map pack, organic results and AI answers by people searching for an estimate. Most demand sits in near-me searches, so the work is an accurate Business Profile, separate pages for interior, exterior and cabinet jobs, lead-safe certification shown honestly, and steady reviews. Results build over several months.

The SEO checklist for painters

  1. Set 'Painter' as the primary Business Profile category

The primary category is the strongest category signal on the profile, and 'Painter' matches the head term. Dalton Luka's category list, last updated 9 May 2026, also contains a separate 'Painting' entry, so confirm both in the category picker and choose one primary. Add secondary categories only for work you actually sell.

Primary: 'Painter'. Secondary only if offered: 'Dry wall contractor' (the list's spelling), 'Wallpaper installer', 'Pressure washing service'.

  2. Build one page per lane, not one 'Interior & Exterior Painting' page

Interior, exterior, cabinet painting, deck staining and drywall repair are searched separately and by different people at different times of year. A single services page cannot match all of them. Give each lane its own URL, its own photos and its own questions answered, and keep commercial work on a page of its own.

    URLs such as /interior-painting/, /exterior-painting/, /cabinet-painting/, /deck-staining/, /drywall-repair/ and /commercial-painting/.

  3. Get lead-safe certified before you claim anything about it

Federal rule 40 CFR 745.81(a)(2)(ii) says no firm may "perform, offer, or claim to perform" renovations in target housing or child-occupied facilities without EPA certification. We read "offer" as covering a website sentence too. EPA's firm certification page says its program "applies to all states, Tribes and territories where EPA has not specifically provided authorization for that state, Tribe or territory to operate the program themselves", and it lists the states that "are authorized to administer their own RRP programs in lieu of the federal program." Check that list first. Apply to EPA, or to your state if it runs its own program, assign a certified renovator to the work, and only then publish the certification.

After certification, add one plain line to the site and the profile, and link to the lookup for whoever certified you, EPA or your state, so a homeowner can confirm your firm.

  4. Tell homeowners what the lead-safe rule changes for them

A homeowner with a pre-1978 house should not first learn about the rule at the estimate. Explain on the interior and exterior pages that 40 CFR 745.84(a)(1) requires the firm to "Provide the owner of the unit with the pamphlet" and to follow its acknowledgment or certificate-of-mailing options, and say what you need from them, such as the year the house was built.

Put the question 'Was the home built before 1978?' on the quote form and in the phone script.

  5. Publish ahead of each lane's season

The 12-month series differ by lane. Cabinet painting searches peaked in January, deck staining in April, and exterior cost research rose from March, with a July spike that may be a data artifact. A page that goes live during the peak has missed the weeks when people were comparing, so date your content calendar against these series and publish a lane's page well before its peak.

Cabinet painting page live by November, deck staining page by February, exterior cost page by spring.

  6. Post real job photos with a plain description

Painting is judged by the finished surface, so a profile and a service page without photos of your own work lose the comparison. Upload completed rooms, exteriors and cabinets from real jobs, with a line on the surface, the prep and the coating system used. Do not use stock photography.

Caption format: 'Exterior, cedar siding, scraped and primed, two coats, 2026 job.'

  7. Run a weekly review process, and ask after the walkthrough

BrightLocal's survey, published February 2026, found 47% of consumers won't use a business with fewer than 20 reviews and 74% seek reviews written in the last three months. Ask when the customer has walked the finished work, send the request the same day, and let the customer choose what to say about the room or surface: Google's review policy says merchants should not "request that specific content be included".

Track reviews received in the last 90 days, since that is the window most consumers say they check.

  8. Show how you price, using your own jobs

'Interior painting cost' and 'exterior house painting cost' are searched thousands of times a month. Rather than copy a national range, publish what drives your prices: square footage, ceiling height, surface condition, number of coats and prep time. If you give ranges, build them from your own recent estimates and date them.

A short table of the five factors with what each adds to prep time, and the date of your last review of the page.

  9. Add cabinet and drywall pages only if crews do the work

Both lanes carry real search volume, but a page for work you hand to others sets up a poor first call. Describe the process, the prep and the finish, and show your own examples. If a trade licence is needed for the work in your state, ask your licensing board before you advertise it.

A cabinet page that states how doors are removed, where they are sprayed, and how long the kitchen is without doors.

  10. Mark the business up as a HousePainter

Schema.org has a HousePainter type, a more specific type of HomeAndConstructionBusiness, which is itself a LocalBusiness, described as "A house painting service." Use it for the business entity on the home page, with the service area, opening hours and phone number matching the profile.

Use the same name, phone number and service areas in the markup as on the Business Profile.

  11. Show your state licence number and where to verify it

Painting licensing varies by state, so check whether your board requires the number in advertising. Put your licence number in the footer and on estimates where it does, and link to your state board's lookup. Your own state's contractor board publishes what applies.

Footer line: 'Licence no. [number], [state board name]' with a link to the lookup page.

Google Business Profile for painters

Primary category
Painter
Secondary categories to consider
Dry wall contractor, Wallpaper installer, Pressure washing service
Services to list
Interior painting, Exterior painting, Cabinet painting, Deck staining, Drywall repair, Wallpaper installation, Pressure washing before painting, Commercial painting, Lead-safe pre-1978 home painting
  • Google's guidelines say "Your name should reflect your business's real-world name", so keep 'Interior Exterior Cabinet Painters' out of the name field and put services in the services list.
  • Google's guidelines say a service-area business should hide its address; its example is a plumber working from home, and the same applies to a painter. Set the service area to the places you really cover.
  • Dalton Luka's list (last updated 9 May 2026) has no 'Epoxy flooring contractor' and no 'Decorating service' entry. Use the services list for those, and confirm names in the category picker.
  • Upload completed work in each lane, because customers compare finish quality before they call.
  • Use Q&A and posts for the first-visit questions: what happens at the estimate, how long a room takes and what the homeowner needs to move.

Getting found in ChatGPT and Google's AI answers

Homeowners put local questions to Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity: who paints cabinets nearby, whether a company handles older homes, what an exterior job involves. Answers to local-provider questions are assembled from Business Profiles, reviews and pages that state facts in plain text, which are all things a painting company controls. A page that describes work as 'quality finishes' gives an answer engine nothing to quote.

  • State each lane's process in sentences: surfaces handled, prep steps, coats, and typical crew size.
  • Say plainly whether your firm is EPA lead-safe certified, only once it is, and link to the lookup for whoever certified you, EPA or your state.
  • List the paint manufacturers' programs you actually hold, by name, on your about page.
  • Name your service areas as towns you genuinely cover, and use the same list on the profile.
  • Describe a finished project by surface and system in text next to each photo, so the facts exist outside the image.

How much does SEO for painters cost?

Search work for a painting company covers the Business Profile, one page for each lane, job photos, a review process and tracking calls by service. Cost depends on how many lanes you sell, how wide your service area is, how many painters compete nearby and whether the existing site has to be rebuilt.

What affects the cost

  • Number of lanes: interior, exterior, cabinets, decks, drywall and commercial each need their own page, photos and questions.
  • Service-area breadth: a company covering several towns needs real evidence of work in each, not cloned pages.
  • Competitor density: near-me results are decided by proximity and reviews, so a crowded market takes more review work.
  • Starting point: sites that put every service on one page need restructuring before new content helps.
  • Photo and review capture: someone on the crew has to photograph jobs and ask for reviews every week, which is staff time rather than agency time.

Turn rankings into booked jobs: answer every call

Plan for estimate calls that arrive while the crew is on a ladder. A caller who reaches voicemail can try the next painter in the results, and the first call is where you learn what you need to quote correctly.

  • Decide what the first call must collect: address, whether the job is interior, exterior, cabinets or drywall, the approximate area, and the preferred start window.
  • Ask the year the home was built. Under 40 CFR 745.84(a), "No more than 60 days before beginning renovation activities in any residential dwelling unit of target housing, the firm performing the renovation must: (1) Provide the owner of the unit with the pamphlet", so a pre-1978 answer changes your timeline.
  • An AI receptionist can ask those questions, offer estimate slots from your calendar and send a confirmation text after hours.
  • Tag every call and form with its lane, so you can see which pages produce booked estimates and which produce rings.
  • Never let the receptionist promise a price or a start date. It collects details and books the estimate; the estimator quotes.

Seasonality for painters

September and October
'Painters near me' reached about 165,000 US searches in September 2025 and about 135,000 in October. Because unrelated near-me terms share this peak, treat it as a pattern worth watching rather than a proven fall rush. 'Exterior painters near me' reached about 18,100 in September.
November and December
The year's low. 'Painters near me' fell to about 60,500 in November 2025, 'exterior painters near me' to about 6,600, 'cabinet painting near me' to about 2,400 and 'deck staining near me' to about 880 in November and December. Use this window to publish pages for the lanes that peak next.
January and February
'Painters near me' returned to about 165,000 in January 2026. 'Cabinet painting near me' hit about 22,200 in January. 'Interior painters near me' was about 18,100 in January and February 2026, the same level as September and October 2025, so interior demand has an autumn high as well as a winter one.
March and April
'Interior painting cost' peaked at about 9,900 in March, 'exterior painters near me' held about 18,100 in February and March, and 'deck staining near me' peaked at about 8,100 in April.
May to August
'Painters near me' held about 90,500 a month from May to August. 'Exterior house painting cost' reached about 9,900 in July 2026 against about 5,400 in June and August, a one-month jump in the same month 'commercial painters' jumped to about 5,400, so treat July as a possible data artifact. The term already ran about 4,400 to 5,400 from March to June, against about 1,300 in December 2025, so have exterior pricing pages live by spring.

Common SEO mistakes painters make

  • Putting interior, exterior, cabinets and decks on one services page. Give each lane its own URL, photos and questions answered. They are searched separately and peak in different months.
  • Writing 'lead-safe certified' on the site before the firm is certified. 40 CFR 745.81(a)(2)(ii) says no firm may "perform, offer, or claim to perform renovations without certification from EPA under § 745.89 in target housing or child-occupied facilities", subject to the exceptions in § 745.82. Get certified first, by EPA or by your state if it runs its own program, then publish the claim and link the lookup for whoever certified you.
  • Waiting until the busy season to start the work. Pages for each lane should be live before its peak. Cabinet painting searches peaked in January and exterior cost research rose from March.
  • Using stock photos or only finished-room shots. Post your own jobs from every lane with a line on surface, prep and system. Painting is judged by the finish.
  • Building a page for every town within driving distance. Create a page only where you have done work and can show it. Otherwise list the towns you serve on the profile and the contact page.
  • Adding both 'house painters near me' and 'painters near me' to a keyword plan. They return identical data in Google Ads, so count the pool once and write one page for the intent.
  • Advertising cabinet or drywall work the crew subcontracts. List a lane only when your people perform it and your state licence covers it. Ask your licensing board if unsure.

How long does SEO take for painters?

  1. Month 1

Audit the profile, site and listings. Confirm the primary category, correct hours and service area, add the year-built question to the quote form, and start weekly review requests. Begin RRP firm certification, with EPA or with your state if it runs its own program, if you work on pre-1978 homes.

  2. Months 2-4

Split the single services page into lane pages, add real job photos and add HousePainter markup. Publish the page for the next peaking lane. Map position near your office usually moves first.

  3. Months 5-8

Publish cost and process pages from your own estimates, add commercial if you want it, and ask for reviews at a steady pace. Compare booked estimates by lane.

  4. Months 9-12

Refresh seasonal pages ahead of their peaks, compare a full year of booked jobs by lane, and check how AI tools describe your services and service area.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO for painters cost?

The drivers are how many lanes you sell, how large your service area is and how many painters compete nearby. A one-crew company selling interior and exterior work in one town needs far less than a multi-crew company selling cabinets, decks and commercial work across several towns. We do not publish industry price ranges without a reliable source.

Is SEO still worth it for painters when people ask AI?

Yes, because answers about local painters draw on Business Profiles, reviews and pages that state facts in text. A painter whose site says what surfaces they prepare, which lanes they offer and whether the firm is lead-safe certified gives an answer something to repeat, and one with a gallery of unlabelled photos does not.

Can I do the SEO for my painting company myself?

Much of it. Categories, hours, photos, service lists and review requests are owner work. Where we would expect you to want help is splitting the site into lane pages, adding markup and keeping listings consistent as the schedule fills.

How long does it take?

Map pack movement close to your address often shows in 2-4 months. Competing for 'painters near me' where many companies sit nearby is usually a longer build, because reviews and consistency decide it as much as the site.

Do I need EPA lead-safe certification to advertise painting?

Only if you work in target housing or child-occupied facilities. 40 CFR 745.81(a)(2)(ii) says "no firm may perform, offer, or claim to perform renovations without certification from EPA" in those places, "unless the renovation qualifies for one of the exceptions identified in § 745.82(a) or (c)." Read those exceptions on Cornell LII or eCFR. EPA's firm certification page lists the states "authorized to administer their own RRP programs in lieu of the federal program"; if you work in one of them, the state certifies you, and EPA notes that "if you work in more than one state, you may need both EPA and state certification." Confirm your situation with EPA or with your state's program.

How can a customer verify that a painter is certified?

EPA's firm certification page links to a searchable lookup of EPA-certified firms. If your state runs its own RRP program, the state certifies you instead, and EPA's page links to each of those state programs. Make sure the business name on your site matches the name on your certification, and link to the lookup for whoever certified you.

Which painters need a state licence?

It depends on the state. California's CSLB, for example, has a C-33 classification: "A painting and decorating contractor prepares by scraping, sandblasting or other means and applies any of the following: paints, papers, textures, fabrics, pigments, oils, turpentines, japans, driers, thinners, varnishes, shellacs, stains, fillers, waxes, adhesives, water and any other vehicles, mediums and materials which adhere by evaporation and may be mixed, used and applied to the surfaces of structures and the appurtenances thereto for purposes of decorating, protecting, fireproofing and waterproofing." Check your own state contractor board for its rule.

Should I publish prices for interior and exterior painting?

Publish how you price rather than a national figure. 'Interior painting cost' is searched about 6,600 times a month in the US, and a page that lists the factors that move your quote (area, ceiling height, surface condition, coats, prep time) answers it without promising a number you cannot honor.

Is it worth building cabinet painting and drywall repair pages?

Yes if your crew does the work. 'Drywall repair near me' and 'cabinet painting near me' both carry measurable demand, and each is a different customer from the whole-house buyer. Skip the page if the work is subcontracted.

Does commercial painting need a separate page?

Yes. Commercial buyers ask different questions about schedules, after-hours work and insurance than homeowners. The data shows 'commercial painters' at about 1,900 monthly searches against about 110,000 for 'painters near me', so build it as its own page with its own enquiry route.
